What do you want for WE14: Celebrate SWE?

Although we are many months from WE14 in LA, the conference planning is underway. Each year, Celebrate SWE! ends the conference with excellent food, awards, and entertainment. As the graduate community continues to grow, it is important to include our input in both the professional and social activities.  So we ask, what do you want to see at CelebrateSWE! this year? More graduate student awards? More inter-regional interaction?  Certain speakers? Open bar?

In the comment section, let us know how CelebrateSWE! can be improved. The responses will be relayed to the conference advisory board who are responsible for planning the conference. This will be a great opportunity for them to hear your thoughts and ideas.

WE12: The Postdoc: Why and How

Postdoctoral training can provide for diversification of technical expertise as well as enhance one’s career development. Critical elements of a successful training period include the selection of an appropriate project(s), the selection of a mentor and the environment within which the work will be done. Central to the process is a clear plan of achievable goals defined by the postdoc in collaboration with her/his mentor. This session explored the pros and cons of pursuing postdoctoral training and presented strategies to achieve success in the postdoctoral training period.  Click The Postdoc for the slides that include resources from the presentation.

Lisa M. Curtis, PhD received her PhD in cell biology at the University of Florida (UF). She completed postdoctoral training at UF and at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) before transitioning to a faculty position at UAB in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology. She is a past member of the National Postdoctoral Association Board of Directors, and she served as a member and interim chair of the UAB Postdoctoral Association. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UAB where she conducts research focused on the cell biology of acute kidney injury.

Graduate School Related Sessions for WE12 Conference Survey

Hi everyone! It’s that time of year again—time to start planning for WE12! The purpose of this survey is to gather feedback from graduate students and post-docs about sessions previously offered at SWE Annual Conferences, any ideas for sessions you would like to see, and what level of commitment you would be willing to take on. There are a few questions on multiple pages, and the length of the survey will depend on your responses (max 15 minutes). Please make sure to continue through the end, until you have reached a confirmation page. Based on responses we will hold a conference call again (like last year) to help us all start planning sessions collaboratively. Please forward the survey to other graduate students that would like to get involved!

Feel free to email me with any questions.
