(1) Rapid Fire Sessions
Year after year, Rapid Fire presentation prove to be a very beneficial way for SWE grads to practice presenting their research in front of their peers and a panel of judges. The call for applications is officially open and due on Monday, September 26th at 11:59 pm EST. Please fill out the application here. <LINK>
Master’s and PhD students are highly encouraged to apply.
(2) GradSWE Member Survey
Does your university have a GradSWE committee? If so, we would love to have your input! Each GradSWE committee arranges their funding and committee structures in a slightly different way. We are planning to devote time to discussing this at WE16. Ultimately, these efforts will create a reference of “best practices” as GradSWE committees become more prevalent across the country. (3) New GradSWE Student Mentoring Program
GMC-elect, Genevieve Kane, is organizing a mentoring program for the GradSWE Community. This is a great opportunity to ask/answer questions and connect with your fellow SWE members.
(4) Postdoc Opportunities at Penn State
The College of Information Sciences and Technology and The Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University are currently seeking US Citizen candidates for three (3) postdoctoral scholarship positions. The job locations are in the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area. The Scholars Program was designed to utilize mission-critical expertise possessed by highly qualified subject matter experts in The Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s (DTRA) mission to combat and respond to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) proliferation and use. Recent graduates and aspiring 2016/2017 graduates are encouraged to apply.
(1) The first position seeks candidates with a Ph.D. or equivalent in computational sociology, computational social science, or a related field. Skills required include computational modeling and simulation (agent-based modeling, social network analysis, Monte Carlo methods, uncertainty quantification, etc.) and proficiency in HPC computer programming as well as a deep understanding of social sciences. Emphasis on human behavior during crisis and disaster scenarios is beneficial. Please see the full posting athttps://psu.jobs/job/64230.
(2) The second positions seeks candidates with a Ph.D. or equivalent in physical science or engineering, such as applied physics, nuclear science or engineering, physics, or a related field. Skills required include knowledge of nuclear physics and a general understanding of radiation detection methods. Training or experience in additional nuclear science & engineering areas is beneficial. Experimental or theoretical specialties are welcome, but candidates need to be willing and flexible at learning and reviewing concepts beyond their specialty. (3) The third position will support research activities to improve methods for understanding nuclear explosion monitoring with an emphasis on seismic methods. Candidates should have a Ph.D. or equivalent in physical science or engineering, such as applied physics, geology, geophysics or other geosciences, physics, or a related field. Skills and knowledge required include properties of geological media, and an understanding of scientific analysis methods in detecting and characterizing earthquakes and other seismic phenomena. All candidates should have an interdisciplinary background and be willing and flexible at learning and reviewing concepts beyond their specialty. This is not a bench research position within a lab; it is focused on support of basic research and program management. The successful applicants must be US citizens capable of obtaining a security clearance. The appointment will be for a one-year period with a strong possibility of renewal. (5) Survey on Graduate Studies Funding
Grad students from Georgia Tech are looking to get in touch with people who have “nontraditional” funding sources for their graduate program (e.g. NOT a research assistant, teaching assistant or well-known fellowship). If you fit this criteria or know someone who does, please forward this to them! They are looking to profile them for a We16 talk on funding your graduate degree! Link to the form is here: <LINK>
