The 2016 Region C SWE conference was hosted by the University of Arkansas in Rogers, AR from February 5th to 7th. The theme of the conference was “Inspiring People, Products, and Possibilities”. The Graduate community had a great time networking during lunch on Saturday, presenting at the research poster competition, and attending graduate focused information sessions.
The conference committee reserved two tables at the Saturday lunch for the graduate community to come together. Graduates from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas enjoyed front row seats to the key note speaker guest speaker Laura Philips from Wal-Mart and Jessica Rannow, President Elect, who gave the State of SWE address.
Following lunch, the afternoon got off to a start with the research poster competition.
Thank you to everyone who participated and congratulations to our winners:
1st Place: Mohab Dessounki, “The Influence of CEC, Salinity, and Silt Content on the Stress Dependent Petrophysical Properties of Resedimented Mudrocks”
2nd Place: Jasmina Burek, “Environmental Sustainability of Distribution and Retail Center Networks in the United States”
3rd Place: Mengying Yuan, “High 1 Performance Solid Polymer Electrolyte with Graphene Oxide Nano Sheets for Flexible Lithium Ion Batteries”
Shortly after the poster competition, information sessions for graduates started including “Graduates in SWE” and “Life after Graduate School”. Prerna Jain, from the Graduate group at A&M, presented “Life after Graduate School” by telling her inspiring journey from an undergraduate degree in Civil engineering to working in industry in India, then going back to school for a law degree and now pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. Through the many twists and turns of the journey through graduate studies, Prerna’s best advice was to know yourself and let your interests guide the way.
