WE11: Entering Industry with a Graduate Degree

Kimber Brenneman

This panel was very diverse and generated a lot of discussion even after the session ended.  Kristi Tanouye started working for St. Jude Medical after completing a B.S./M.S at Washington University in Biomedical Engineering and had lots of good advice to offer. She explained how having a M.S. wasn’t necessary for her current position but it definitely expedited her hiring process. Olga Shebanova works as a Research Investigator at Novartis after earning her Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. She had worked in industry before pursuing a Ph.D. and was able to offer a lot of insight on her job search process and how her industry experience was viewed by employers. She also shared with the audience what her current employer was most impressed with during her interview. Rebecca MacDonald had a completely different perspective as she obtained her M.A. in Economics while working, then moved into a different position within her company. This group of panelists shared a lot of honest and insightful information with the audience.
